Players leave games for various reasons, but the most significant factors are boredom and frustration. Although game developers can always enhance the game's entertainment value, This idea aims to improve player satisfaction by addressing frustration caused by the game's lack of competitiveness. Retetion is a crucial metric that we want to enhance.
As a UX designer, my responsibility was to re-engage players who lose interest in a game due to infrequent wins. This lack of success leads to a decrease in the game's appeal and eventually causes the player to lose interest in creating new games. To prevent this from happening, I aimed to restore the "flow" to these players
So how can we make that segment of players more competitive? To enhance the competitiveness of a particular group of players, it is essential to focus on teaching them effective game strategies that they can apply on the board. Moreover, providing them with a suitable game that reinforces these newly learned strategies is also crucial. By doing so, players can gain a better understanding of how to apply their skills in a practical setting, thereby improving their overall gameplay.
The first step was to send those players a notification with an invitation to watch a short and entertaining tutorial with five simple and practical tips and tricks carefully thought out to help them win more games and thus make them feel more competitive, we knew that as long as they still have the app downloaded, we can communicate with them via push notification and remind them why they downloaded the game in the first place and give them a taste of something new, that will make them curious to open our game again.
The first thing I did was put together a long list of tips and tricks collected from a select group of avid WWF players, then together with one of the producers we made a selection with the five most useful tips of all and with that valuable information we create a easy to navigate tutorial.
Once the onboarding experience was completed, the next step was to display a custom-made experience on my games screen with a minimalist approach, since normally this screen looks cluttered with games and information that can often be overwhelming, so in this case we offered exclusively a welcome message with only one game available specifically a "match of the day" game which is a specially created game with a player of similar skill along with a compact version of the "tips and tricks" tutorial.
It’s important to understand frustration in games and keep it on a good level because players that get frustrated have a higher chance of quitting the game. However games that are considered to be challenging can get the players motivated to continue because of the sense of satisfaction when he or she overcomes a challenging task therefore we also have to be very careful when choosing who to help.
