UI art for FarCry 3

During my period as a UI designer for Far Cry 3, I gained invaluable insights and knowledge that proved to be a significant milestone in my career. It was a unique opportunity for me as it was the first time I worked on a next-gen console game and my first experience with a first-person shooter (FPS) game.

My primary role was to create iconography and prototype UI designs using Flash, among other tasks. This role allowed me to explore my creative potential while maintaining the game's narrative and visual identity.

01. The Challenges

One of the main challenges was creating UI elements that fit the game's theme and aesthetic while still being intuitive and easy to use. Far Cry 3 takes place on a tropical island and has a gritty, violent tone, so the UI needed to reflect that while still being functional and user-friendly.

When designing UI elements for video games, it is crucial to prioritize those that do not hinder the gameplay experience for a better user experience. This is especially important in first-person shooter (FPS) games like Far Cry, where players need to quickly access important information and menu options without them interfering with their ability to play the game. Therefore, UI elements must be designed to be as unobtrusive as possible while still being easily accessible to the player.

02. The Approach

To overcome this, I had to develop a profound comprehension of the game's world, characters, and overall theme. Moreover, I had to showcase my skills in creating UI assets that flawlessly blended with the game's existing graphics. The user interface in Far Cry 3 was most mainly implemented using a combination of programming languages and tools, including but not limited to:

Adobe Flash:
The UI elements in Far Cry 3 have a distinct visual style that is reminiscent of Adobe Flash animations. Flash was used to create interactive, animated UI elements that responded to user input. Due to my extensive past experience in Flash animations, the job of prototyping UI animations was made easier for me during the development process.

Scaleform:
Scaleform was a middleware technology that allowed developers to create UI elements using Adobe Flash and integrate them into game engines such as Unreal Engine, which was used to develop Far Cry 3.
